Hormone Optimisation

Hormone therapy FAQs

Clear answers about testing, suitability, safety and how treatment works at AMCA Medicare.

Do I need blood tests first? +

Yes. Blood tests are the first step for both women’s and men’s hormone pathways so your doctor can review markers before deciding on treatment.

Will I definitely receive hormone therapy? +

No. Therapy is only prescribed if your doctor finds a clinical need based on blood results, symptoms, medical history and suitability.

Is women’s therapy only for menopause? +

No. Many women come during perimenopause, menopause or when investigating symptoms they want to understand medically.

Can hormone changes affect sleep, mood and libido? +

They may contribute to those symptoms, but other causes exist. A doctor-led assessment helps identify the most appropriate next step.

Can low testosterone affect how I feel? +

It may be associated with changes in libido, energy, mood, strength and wellbeing. Blood tests and doctor review are essential because other causes are common.

Is hormone therapy safe? +

It can be appropriate for selected patients, but it is not suitable for everyone. Your doctor reviews risks, explains side effects and monitors treatment if prescribed.

Can men use testosterone therapy if trying to have children? +

Discuss fertility plans with your doctor first. Testosterone therapy may not be appropriate for men planning fertility in the near term.

Where does medication come from? +

If prescribed, medication is supplied through the appropriate pharmacy pathway. Compounded medicines, when required, are prepared through an authorised South African compounding pharmacy.
